Memorial Day Weekend - Updated
Submitted by mAdBoY on Fri, 05/27/2005 - 14:48.

Hope everyone had a fun and safe weekend. Looking for any events/missions for this weekend, so send your requests in.

1) Farming some items to generate gil to start growing ores. Anyone else who is interested in farming in Rolanberry?

2) After leveling up MNK yesterday, I pretty much have all of my jobs up to at least lvl 10. I have considered spending a good deal of time in Valkurm working on my lower jobs. (ex. BLM is lvl 10, so I would like to be able to sub WMG or BLM when I use my RDM.) If anyone has jobs in the 10-16 range and is interested in starting a static party, let me know.

Thirsty has expressed an interest in forming a low lvl party as well. I will post my job levels to help determine what jobs we might need.

/BRD(4) /BST(4)
/SMN(9)/MNK (10)/THF (11)/RNG (11)/DRK (11)/BLM (11)/SAM (12) /WAR(14) /WMG(16)
/DRG(27) /RDM(31)

I still lack PAL and NIN as jobs, but have worked hard on giving each jobs it's fair chance of play. This has helped me determine which jobs I do NOT want to play. heh
I will finish unlocking PAL/NIN very soon, so I can offer many job variations in a party. Look over the list and let me know if you're interested.

Cool

Rooster - I was thinking the same thing when I posted this message. I knew that I was about to spend a good deal of time there working on these different jobs and figured this would be a good way to help the newer players out in learning the ropes. I remember my first trip into the dunes and how confused I was the first time the conversation included the words "tank" and "nuker." Obviously, it didn't take me long * I's edukatud ;)* to figure out what they were referring to, but it still makes things tough. Luckily, I had a very cool pt who didn't mind explaining a few things. Our pt leader was a high lvl player working on a new job, who helped an entire pt of no sub players. ^_^
Knowing what I know how, this person must of had the patience of a saint. 0:)

So yeah, I'd like to return the favor and help some of our guys learn "how" a good pt should run. *before they pick up any bad habits* And quite honestly, it may help some of us more experience players learn new talents. I know I do not make much of an experienced puller in parties because I've haven't used RNG or THF in battle before, or may learn to like jobs we've never considered before. I found myself loving playing SMN this weekend and was able to level it up to lvl 9.

Sam - What level BCNM? If I'm able, I'd love to lend a hand. There are even a few other drops that would benefit me as well, so I have a 30 level sky orb in my storage to contribute if it helps.

Nearly any BCNM

Most BCNMs drop Astral Rings these days. So, it really could be just about any.

I have a BCNM 20 orb that I've had for a while, but know of no BCNM 20 that MNK is good at.

I've already helped Drifter get one, and if she were willing to take a break from a mage job and lend it to me, then all I would need would be one more. Otherwise, a few good BCNMs and I bet we could get the ones I need.

Great Idea!

I like the idea of a low level static. It would be especially good for some of our newer players. Much kinder than the usual practice of dropping them off at the Dunes to fend for themselves, with little or no preparation. Some might consider this practice as a "rite of passage" sort of thing. But to me it is just plain unnecessary cruelty. Why not help our new friends learn the ropes in a supportive environment?

Well, anyway, please count me in. I currently have the following low level jobs:

WHM10, WHM12, DRG12, BST12

I also know a certain RDM11, WHM10, and a WAR12 who might be interested.

Please let us know what the plan is before we all level up beyond this range again, lol.

Bah!

I am one of those that consider it a rite of passage. People who are PL'ed through the dunes, or otherwise have everything handed to them on a silver platter at the early levels wind up not learning shit and becoming crap players later on. By holding their hands through here you'd be doing a disservice to them as well as to everyone else they'd party with later on.

When I first went through the dunes (my first four times) I never had any help. I didn't have powerlevelers. I didn't have help with the subjob quest (took me 16 hours of straight playing to get my damned skull). I had no help with my gausbit grasses. I had Val's help with one of my Kazham airship pass items, and that took us around 5 hours.

I sweat and I bled and it made me a better player.

Dropping them into the dunes having not learned anything of the basic party ropes is a bad thing, and I'm all for educating them on the finer points of partying. If you recall, Roo, I actually taught you the basics of tanking way back when you first went through.

But I don't think that they should get plunked straight into a static that will limit their exposure to other jobs. Every single person I've played with that has had that winds up having some misconceived notion about one job or another. I've encountered people who hate PLDs because of this, or hate MNKs, or NIN, or RDM, or DRK, etc.

IMHO, the best time a static should be considered is when a group of friends wish to play more together and they all know their jobs very well such that they can gain EXP faster than the average party. Statics for the sake of avoiding non-static parties never work. Just ask Raven, Ray, or Bomb. Each one has a tale of a static turning sour and dissolving.

Also, for what it's worth, it has been a very long time since I've had a bad party in the dunes (Crawler's Nest and Garliage Citadel, on the other hand.... ;-) I think that, as you gain more experience, you learn how to pick better parties from the mix :-)

relax sam

We're not talking about powerlevelers here. And we're not talking about strictly limiting new players exposure to other parties. And we're not talking about putting together the most uber static on the server. It's just a group of friends who like playing together, learning from each other, and picking up some experience points in the process.

That's a great guide you've written up, and everyone should read it. I read it, but I still wasn't prepared for what awaited me in the Dunes. I wasn't prepared for being called to most stupid n00b on the planet by stupid arrogant players. LOL

I expect this will wind up being more like a quasi-static party. Where we try to get together at the same time, but if someone can't make it, we fill in their place with someone else.

So far the following players have expressed an interest:

Thersites, DRG12, BST12, WHM11
Meow, RDM11
Kitchel, WAR13
Kamu, WHM11
Kyler, RNG12 or PLD12
Maior, THF13, WHM?
Val, many jobs to choose from

We tentatively set a date and time for out first party:

Friday 6:00 PM Pacific time
Place: Bub. Peninsula

Wasn't prepared? :-)

Only because you didn't listen :-)

I actually sat down and tried to show you this stuff when it was your first time in the dunes and I distinctly remember you saying "forget this, I just want to kill things" :-)

BWAHAHAHA ]:)

Well I agree completely that it's a trial by fire and that all new players should pay their dues there, but I do see a benefit in the long run of lending a hand the first time or two there. To keep them from making noob mistakes or picking up bad habits.....like randomly attacking a mob while the puller is bringing one back to the camp. *groan* Or why you shouldn't use AoE attacks in the dunes, things like this. This can also work to the higher level players advantage as well. You can focus on a job that you have very little experience with while they learn the ropes of how to party effectively. I would be a bit noobish if I took my THF/RNG and was pulling for the party. I would feel less nervous about pulling for a low level party like this, than trying to figure it out with a bunch of uber l33t players who will cuss and scream if you aren't able to chain fast enough for them. :P I ran into this problem the 1 and only time I took my THF/RNG to the dunes....key part of this story.....There were over 10-15 pts that I counted just around the zone to Konsh. Highlands, so to say there area was crowded was an understatement.

They will have to spend their time taking their lumps in the dunes regardless (for their subjob, new jobs they take, etc) so I don't think they are skipping by this part. And no, I wasn't talking about Plvling at all. We'd have to do it the hard way. ^_^

My jobs

* WHM 10 - This is the one I'd LOVE to join you guys with. I need WHM as an end-game sub for MNK (end-game, MNK/WHM becomes a nuker doing over 2000 points of damage with chi blast, and WHM gives the biggest MND boost). The problem is, I need astral rings before I can do this. Anyone willing to help me with some BCNMs?

* DRK 10 - Blech... I don't wanna fund this job.

* BST 10 - Heh, kind of saving this one. Want to wait until I'm done with other stuff and then see who else wants to go out with me on some BST parties :-)

* THF 13 - It's close. If you guys were 13ish by the time I get back from my honeymoon, I'd definately join you with this.

* NIN 19 - Again, if you guys were 19ish by the time I get back from my honeymoon, I'd definately join you with this.

* BLM 11 - Meh.

I do have PLD (1) but I am saving that one for when Jessica joins me in playing.

I will be around this weekend for stuff, but then, after that, I will be gone for around 2 weeks for the honeymoon.
